Trent Boult, a bowler from New Zealand, reached a new height in his ODI career.
The left-arm bowler in the ICC Cricket World Cup has accelerated to 50 wickets. He reached the landmark in the 41st game of the Bengaluru 2023 World Cup against Sri Lanka.
Boult is the first New Zealand player to reach 50 wickets in the international competition.
Third left-arm bowler to reach 50 wickets in the ODI World Cup
In the history of the ODI World Cup, Boult is the third left-arm pacer to claim 50 or more wickets.
Australia’s Mitchell Starc tops the rankings with 59 scalps at 19.74.
Before Starc overtook him, the record was held by the late, great Wasim Akram of Pakistan. At 23.83, Akram claimed 55 wickets.
In the meantime, left-arm pacer Boult overcame Chaminda Vaas (49), to become a member of this exclusive group.
The sixth bowler to record more than 50 wickets in an ODI World Cup
Boult has now achieved the feat of taking 50+ ODI World Cup wickets as a bowler.
Glenn McGrath, a former Australian pacer, is leading the way with 71 scalps at 18.19, according to ESPNcricinfo.
Muthiah Muralidaran, the spin guru from Sri Lanka, comes in second with 68 scalps at 19.63.
Starc has 59 wickets, while Lasith Malinga has 56. Malinga had a 22.87 average.
With 55 scalps, Akram comes in fifth on the list.
Boult’s results at all ODI World Cups
Boult recorded the joint-highest number of wickets (22) at 16.86 in the 2015 competition. Boult finished with 17 scalps from 10 games at 28.17 in the 2019 competition. Boult, who is now in his ninth match of the 2023 World Cup in India, has already claimed 11 wickets.
Boult’s career ODI statistics
Playing in his 113th One-Day International, Boult took the wicket against Pakistan on Thursday, amassing 208 scalps. He has an economy rate of less than five and averages about twenty-four.
Against Sri Lanka, Boult has accelerated to 18 wickets in 14 games.
The Kiwi speedster, meanwhile, has taken 31 wickets in neutral locations and 30 wickets on Asian territory.
