South Africa’s Dominance Over Bangladesh in Test Cricket: Two Monumental Wins
When it comes to Test cricket, few teams have showcased as much dominance over Bangladesh as South Africa. Over the years, the Proteas have handed the Tigers some of their heaviest defeats. Two such commanding victories stand out — both by innings margins, and both highlighting the gulf in class between the two sides at the time.
Innings and 273 Runs Victory – Chattogram, 2024
South Africa completed a 2-0 series sweep over Bangladesh in spectacular fashion during their 2024 tour, crushing the hosts in the second and final Test in Chattogram.
The Proteas amassed a mammoth 575/6 declared in their only innings. The highlight of the innings was a trio of centuries by Tony de Zorzi, Tristan Stubbs, and Wiaan Mulder, who batted Bangladesh out of the contest.
Bangladesh, unable to cope with the relentless pace and pressure, folded cheaply — first for 159, and then for just 143 after being asked to follow on. The massive defeat by an innings and 273 runs was South Africa’s biggest Test win to date, underscoring their complete dominance.
Innings and 254 Runs Victory – Bloemfontein, 2017
South Africa’s second-biggest win in Test history also came at the expense of Bangladesh, this time in Bloemfontein during the 2017 home series.
After piling up a massive 573/4 declared, the Proteas put the Tigers to the sword. The innings was bolstered by a flurry of hundreds from Dean Elgar, Aiden Markram, Hashim Amla, and Faf du Plessis, displaying a batting masterclass on home soil.
Bangladesh crumbled under pressure, managing only 147 in the first innings and 172 in the second. Leading the charge was Kagiso Rabada, who grabbed two five-wicket hauls, sealing the victory by an innings and 254 runs.
These two matches stand as historic reminders of South Africa’s Test cricket prowess and their overwhelming record against Bangladesh. Whether at home or away, the Proteas have made a habit of asserting their dominance in no uncertain terms.
