Shami, Zaheer, and Srinath's World Cup statistics
Mohammed Shami broke multiple records on his way to a five-wicket haul against Sri Lanka in Match 33 of the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2023.
This was Shami’s second fifer in three games, and he has now become India’s leading wicket-taker in World Cups.
He surpassed the 44 scalps held by Javagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan.
Let’s compare the three pacers’ WC stats.

A scorching spell versus SL
Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliance with the new ball meant SL were tottering at 3/4.
The baton was then given onto Shami, who dented the opponents even further.
He was right on the money early, grabbing two wickets in his first over.
The pace merchant then ran through the lowest order. Shami’s brilliance ensured SL were folded for 55 whilst chasing 358.

Shami beats his compatriots Shami, the man with the golden arm, clocked statistics of 5/18 from five overs.
He has rushed to 45 ODI World Cup scalps in just 14 matches.
While Zaheer concluded his WC career with 44 scalps in 23 matches, Srinath needs 34 matches to take as many wickets in the competition.
Hence, Shami has not played even half of Srinath’s WC matches.

Best average in WC history
Shami’s bowling average in the competition is a jaw-dropping 12.91.
No other bowler with at least 25 WC wickets even averages 16.
While Zaheer averages 20.22 in the competition, Srinath has an average of 27.81.
However, Srinath’s economy rate of 4.32 is the best among the three Indian pacers.
Shami (4.91) and Zaheer (4.47) have also demonstrated strong economic performance.

WC fifers tied for first place
Shami’s three World Cup fifers are the joint-most for any bowler.
He is tied for first place with Mitchell Starc of Australia.
No other Indian bowler has more than one World Cup fifer. Srinath and Zaheer neither own a WC fifer.
Shami’s seven four-plus wicket hauls are the most in tournament history for a bowler.
Zaheer and Srinath each have one and two WC four-fers.
