Rohan Jaitley Emerges as Frontrunner to Replace Jay Shah as BCCI Secretary
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is poised for significant changes as incumbent secretary Jay Shah is rumored to be the leading candidate for the International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman position. Although Shah has not yet confirmed his decision, reports suggest he is likely to secure the top job at the ICC.
Speculation has been rife that if Shah indeed accepts the ICC role, Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) president Rohan Jaitley may step in as the new BCCI secretary. There’s growing consensus within the BCCI in favor of Jaitley, the son of late politician Arun Jaitley, taking over the secretary’s position.
While other names are being floated for the BCCI secretary role, including Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Avishek Dalmiya, Punjab’s Dilsher Khanna, Goa’s Vipul Phadke, and Chhattisgarh’s Prabhtej Bhatia, no definitive decisions have been made regarding Shah’s ICC plans or his potential successor.
A former BCCI secretary commented that while there are no strict rules for succession, the president, secretary, and treasurer positions hold significant power within the organization. He emphasized that bypassing experienced individuals within the system to appoint a new secretary is generally uncommon. However, the decision ultimately rests on Shah’s choice regarding the ICC role.
Meanwhile, the ICC chairman position is also up for grabs. The incumbent chairman, Greg Barclay, has announced his intention to step down at the end of his third term on November 30. The new ICC chairman will assume office on December 1, and the nomination deadline is set for August 27.
If Shah were to become the ICC chairman, he would be the youngest ever to hold the position. He would join the ranks of previous ICC chairmen like Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar.
