Mohammed Shami’s Fitness Routine Ahead of England Test Series

In a recent interview with Times of India, Mohammed Shami opened up about his training regimen for the upcoming five-Test series against England.

He revealed that he is focusing on strength exercises, increasing his bowling load in the nets, and closely managing his overall workload.

“I’m trying my best, doing hard work, performing strength exercises… delivering maximum numbers of balls in the nets and managing my workload as much as possible.”

Shami emphasized that red-ball cricket requires a higher level of physical preparation, and he’s adjusting his routine accordingly.

On Senior Players and Team Dynamics

Addressing questions about the absence of senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Shami dismissed the idea that age matters much in modern cricket.

“Aaj kal ke cricket mey senior aur junior ka kahan fark hai (there’s no real difference between seniors and juniors in today’s cricket).”

He also stressed the importance of experience in the bowling unit, especially with himself and Jasprit Bumrah leading from the front.

IPL Performance and Transition to Tests

Shami admitted that his performance in the IPL 2025 season fell short of expectations.

“No, I am not satisfied. I couldn’t deliver what I wanted to.”

Playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Shami managed just six wickets in nine matches, with an economy rate of over 11. He also noted that transitioning from T20 to Test cricket takes 15–20 days of focused preparation due to the higher physical demands and longer bowling spells.

Advice on Injury Management for Young Pacers

Offering guidance to young fast bowlers like Mayank Yadav who struggle with injuries, Shami underlined the need for both physical and mental preparation.

“You need to assess the strain your body is under and when you need recovery.”

He emphasized that self-awareness and understanding one’s body are critical to managing the demands of fast bowling effectively.

Shami Unlikely to Feature in England Test Tour

Despite being fit to play in the IPL, reports suggest that Shami is unlikely to be picked for the upcoming Test series in England. According to ESPNcricinfo, he has not yet built up the required workload for the longer format.

His last appearance in Test cricket was during the ICC World Test Championship final against Australia in June 2023.
