LSG Owner Sanjiv Goenka Discusses Rishabh Pant’s Role for IPL 2025
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) owner Sanjiv Goenka has provided insights into Rishabh Pant’s possible role after acquiring the star wicketkeeper-batsman for an unprecedented ₹27 crore during the IPL 2025 auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This historic purchase makes Pant the most expensive player in IPL history, marking a new chapter in his career after eight seasons with the Delhi Capitals.
Goenka hinted that Pant could either open the batting or slot in at No. 3 for LSG in the upcoming season. Alongside Pant, South Africa’s T20 captain Aiden Markram and Australia’s Mitchell Marsh are potential candidates for the opening spots. While discussing the lineup, Goenka noted, “Options include opening with Markram and Marsh, Marsh and Pant, or Markram and Pant. The decision about Pant’s position—whether he will bat at No. 2 or No. 3—is one the team management will make.”
Pant’s record as an opener in IPL is limited. Out of 110 innings, he has opened only four times, scoring 104 runs at an average of 26 and a strike rate of 136.84. However, his explosive style and adaptability could make him a game-changer in the opening slot if LSG chooses to experiment.
Goenka also revealed that England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler was initially considered to create a formidable opening duo alongside Pant. However, Buttler eventually joined the Gujarat Titans for ₹15.75 crore. “We had three scenarios in mind, one of which included both Pant and Buttler. The aim was to establish a dominant opening partnership capable of delivering 60-85 runs in the powerplay. Since Buttler was in the first lot, we adjusted our strategy when we couldn’t secure him,” Goenka explained.
With the addition of Pant to the team, experts and fans are speculating about LSG’s leadership choices for IPL 2025. Nicholas Pooran and Pant have emerged as the top contenders for captaincy. Addressing these speculations, Goenka shared that the decision regarding the captaincy has already been finalized and will be officially announced in the coming days. “People are often surprised by announcements, but I don’t consider them surprises. The decision has been made and will be revealed shortly,” he said.
