Key stats: India thrashes South Africa in the first ODI
On December 17, at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, India crushed South Africa in the first One-Day International.
The run chase was spearheaded by Shreyas Iyer and rookie Sai Sudharsan, as the Men in Blue successfully tracked down 117.
The Proteas lost by just 116 runs earlier, thanks to a nine-wicket partnership between Avesh Khan and Arshdeep Singh.
This is currently South Africa’s lowest domestic ODI total.

Arshdeep and Avesh caused chaos; the former was particularly impressive in the first ten overs. Later, Avesh caused havoc with a four-wicket haul.
With 116, Andile Phehlukwayo was the highest scorer for South Africa (33).
Ruturaj Gaikwad left India early. India won as a result of half-centuries smashed by Sudharsan and Iyer.

For Arshdeep, Reeza Hendricks was his maiden ODI wicket SA’s batting innings got off to a terrible start. In the second over, they lost Rassie van der Dussen and Reeza Hendricks.
In his opening over, Arshdeep removed the pair with consecutive balls. For the next few overs, Tony de Zorzi and Aiden Markram counterattacked, but Arshdeep eventually dismissed the latter.
Andile Phehlukwayo and Heinrich Klaasen were Arshdeep’s final two victims.

Arshdeep’s first-ever ODI wicket
Because of Arshdeep’s skill, the Proteas were behind early in the game. In ten overs, the left-arm seamer claimed five wickets at a cost of just 37 runs.
In ODI cricket, it was his first five-wicket haul. India’s primary T20I seamer, Arshdeep, also claimed his first wicket in the 50-over competition.
In his first three ODIs, he did not have a wicket.

In SA, the third Indian with an ODI fifer
Arshdeep is becoming just the third Indian in ODI cricket history to take a five wickets in South Africa.
On this list, he is only surpassed by Yuzvendra Chahal (5/22 versus SA, 2018) and Ashish Nehra (6/23 vs ENG, WC 2003).
As a result, Arshdeep is the only Indian pacer to have scored an ODI wicket in the Rainbow Nation against South Africa.

SA’s lowest domestic ODI total
As previously stated, South Africa’s score of 116/10 is currently their lowest in home ODI cricket. In this sense, their previous lowest total also came against India. In 2018 in Centurion, they scored 118 against the Men in Blue.
