IPL 2025 Mega Auction Expected in Riyadh with Major Retentions and Releases

The 2025 IPL Mega Auction is anticipated to take place in Riyadh at the end of November. According to sources, the tentative auction dates are set for November 24 to 25. This year’s auction follows a series of high-stakes player retentions and surprising releases across the ten franchise teams.

Franchise teams revealed their core retentions and released some unexpected names. A total of 46 players were retained, accumulating a spending of ₹558.5 crores. Among the retained players, 36 are Indian, including 10 uncapped talents. With these core retentions finalized, teams are now looking ahead to strengthen their rosters through strategic auction picks.

The release of prominent players like Shreyas Iyer (Kolkata Knight Riders), Rishabh Pant (Delhi Capitals), and KL Rahul (Lucknow Super Giants) has created opportunities for franchises seeking experienced Indian captains. Notably, no English players were retained this season. Standout English players, such as Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone, Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, and Harry Brook, were released. Many missed games last season due to international commitments, while some, including Brook, withdrew for personal reasons.

The Mumbai Indians (MI) decided to strengthen their Indian player core, focusing on leadership from players like Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah. They also retained versatile batsmen like Suryakumar Yadav and rising star Tilak Varma. While it was speculated that young player Ishan Kishan would be retained, he was ultimately released. MI enters the auction with ₹45 crore to secure additional players.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) retained only three players, including Virat Kohli, with a retention fee of ₹21 crore. Joining him are Rajat Patidar and Yash Dayal, leaving RCB with one of the largest auction purses at ₹83 crore. Punjab Kings, meanwhile, surprised many by choosing not to retain any capped players, opting for young players Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh. This decision has left them with the highest purse of ₹110.5 crore, indicating a possible shift towards nurturing emerging talent.

Rajasthan Royals retained key batsmen but will look to add an opener. Their auction purse stands at ₹41 crore, the smallest of the teams. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) retained MS Dhoni as an uncapped player, with their core group including Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, and Matheesha Pathirana. Known for blending experience with youth, CSK is expected to focus on balance in the upcoming season.

Here is a summary of retained players by franchise:

1. **Chennai Super Kings**: MS Dhoni, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Matheesha Pathirana.

2. **Delhi Capitals**: Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Tristan Stubbs, Abhishek Porel.

10. **Sunrisers Hyderabad**: Pat Cummins, Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Heinrich Klaasen, Travis Head.

Mumbai Indians retained a strong lineup, led by Rohit Sharma and all-rounder Hardik Pandya. This season, MI seeks to solidify its core by retaining primarily Indian players, which allows them flexibility in their auction spending. Meanwhile, RCB’s conservative retention strategy has left them with an opportunity to spend big on talent in the auction.

Punjab Kings’ strategy to focus on uncapped players highlights their interest in fostering future talent. With the largest auction budget, they could acquire experienced players and talented newcomers to shape a competitive team.

This IPL auction marks a unique blend of strategic decision-making by franchises. The choice to release high-profile players and focus on team balance will likely influence the season. With Riyadh hosting this year’s auction, the IPL continues to reach global audiences, and fans eagerly await how teams will evolve their lineups for the 2025 season.
