Tough Start in South Africa
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s initiation into Test cricket in SENA countries wasn’t an easy one. His maiden tour to South Africa in the 2023–24 season turned out to be a difficult experience. Across four innings, the young left-hander could only manage 50 runs at an average of 12.50.
One bowler who repeatedly troubled him was left-arm pacer Nandre Burger, who dismissed Jaiswal three times during the series. It was a challenging introduction to fast, seaming tracks, and it served as a wake-up call for the young batter as he looked to adapt and grow in foreign conditions.
Redemption in Australia
But champions learn fast. Jaiswal bounced back strongly during India’s 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy against hosts Australia—his only other SENA Test tour so far. Despite India’s overall 1–3 defeat in the five-match series, Jaiswal emerged as one of the shining lights for the visitors.
He accumulated 391 runs at an impressive average of 43.44, second only to Australia’s Travis Head, who scored 448 runs in the series. The highlight of Jaiswal’s tour came in Perth, where he notched up a brilliant 161 in the third innings, anchoring India to their only victory on the tour. He also added two fifties, underlining his growing maturity and resilience.
Historic Partnership with KL Rahul
That Perth Test not only featured Jaiswal’s century but also witnessed a historic stand with opening partner KL Rahul. The duo shared a 201-run partnership—a significant feat in the context of Indian Test cricket abroad.
They became the third Indian opening pair to compile a double-century stand in SENA countries in Tests. Even more impressively, they were just the sixth visiting opening pair ever to notch up a 200+ run stand in Australia, with all the previous five pairs being from England.

Despite his early struggles, Jaiswal’s Test career has blossomed rapidly. As of now, the left-hander has 1,798 runs at a stunning average of 52.88. His tally includes 10 fifties and four centuries, with a highest score of 214 not out.
In 2024 alone, he smashed 36 sixes in Tests—the most by any batter in a single calendar year, setting a new benchmark for aggressive Test opening batsmanship.
