Deepak Chahar and Mohammed Shami are ruled out of the South Africa tour
Star Mohammed Shami, an Indian speedster who helped India’s pace attack in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, has been officially ruled out of the two Test matches against South Africa that are scheduled to take place this summer.
Shami’s availability was contingent upon his level of fitness, and the BCCI medical team had not given their approval.
A family situation has forced Deepak Chahar to miss the ODI portion of the tour.

Why is this story important?
Shami joined the Indian XI after missing the first four World Cup matches as a result of injured Hardik Pandya’s withdrawal.
With 24 scalps, he ended as the highest wicket-taker despite only having played seven games.
He set a number of records. Shami is known to have played through his ankle issue during the World Cup.
That may have disqualified him from the SA Test series.

And what about the substitutes?
In the Indian Premier League (IPL), uncapped pacer Akash Deep of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has taken Chahar’s place in the ODI squad.
Shami’s replacement has not yet been announced by BCCI.
Among the pacers in the Indian XI, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah are lock to start.
Mukesh Kumar, uncapped Prasidh Krishna, and Shardul Thakur would compete for the two open seats.

A review of Shami and Chahar’s figures
Shami has played in 64 Test matches thus far, taking 229 wickets at a strike rate of 27.71.
There are six five-wicket hauls in the total. Additionally, he has destroyed a few Test fifty-fives.
Chahar, meanwhile, is back for India at 30.56 after taking 16 wickets in 13 ODIs.
Out of his four half-centuries on List A, two have been in Indian colors.

Additional Indian team updates
Shreyas Iyer will join the Test squad for preparations, therefore he will miss the second and third ODIs.
For the Test series, head coach Rahul Dravid and his staff will travel with the team.
The coaching staff of India A will provide support to KL Rahul’s ODI team.
Notably, the SA tour concluded with a 1-1 result after the T20I leg.
