In yet another letdown, Afghanistan shocked Pakistan in Chennai during the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup match.

Notably, Afghanistan defeated Pakistan in their first ever ODI match.

Observing the match recap
After Pakistan decided to bat, Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq had a 56-run opening stand.
Shafique and Babar Azam led Pakistan above 100 despite Imam’s departure. They were unable to convert their fifties into tons, though.
Iftikhar Ahmed and Shadab Khan helped Pakistan reach 282/7.
Gurbaz and Zadran shone well for Afghanistan, scoring 130 runs in the opening partnership.
They were propelled to an easy victory by Rahmat and Hashmatullah Shahidi.

Zadran scores his fifth ODI half-century.
Along with Gurbaz, his opening partner, Zadran thoroughly overpowered the Pakistani bowlers.
The first Powerplay saw both Zadran and Gurbaz use their attacking strokes.
While Gurbaz was gone, Zadran, despite suffering from cramps, got his fifth ODI half-century.
Later, he hit 87 off 113 balls, a knock that included 10 fours. Zadran was removed by Hasan Ali in the 34th over.

Highest World Cup opening score for Afghanistan
Only four Afghan openers have scored 50 or more in an ODI World Cup, and Zadran is the latest.
The other three are Gurbaz (80 against England in Delhi, 2023), Rahmat (62 against the West Indies in Leeds, WC 2019), and Javed Ahmadi (51 against Scotland in Dunedin, WC 2015).
Zadran, however, currently holds the World Cup record for the highest opening score by an Afghan team.

Afghanistan’s fastest player to 1,000 ODI runs
Zadran completed 1,000 runs in ODI cricket at the fastest rate ever recorded by an Afghan hitter. In the format, it took him 24 innings and the same number of games to score 1,000 runs.
Zadran outperformed Gurbaz, his opening partner, who had accomplished this accomplishment in 27 innings.
Only 16 other hitters have accomplished the feat more quickly than Ibrahim. Zadran became the 14th player from Afghanistan to score 1,000 runs in an ODI.

6/14
At the end of 10 overs, Afghanistan had scored 60 runs, another record. As of right now in the World Cup, this is their third-highest first Powerplay total. The highest of these results, 79/0, was achieved by Gubraz and Zadran versus England in the current edition.

Afghanistan’s record-breaking collaboration
Gurbaz and Zadran stitched a record 130-run stand to reach the record books. As of right now, in ODI World Cups, this is Afghanistan’s highest opening stand.
The Afghan combination scored 114 against England, marking their second partnership over 100 in the 2023 World Cup.
In ODI cricket, Gurbaz and Zadran currently each have four partnerships that have scored 100 runs or more for Afghanistan.

Noor Ahmed scores three times.
Noor Ahmad, who participated in his fourth ODI, was Afghanistan’s best bowler during the contest. In 10 overs, he grabbed three wickets for 49 runs.
Abdullah Shafique was dismissed by Ahmad, dropping Pakistan to 110/2.
The Afghan spinner prevented Mohammad Rizwan (8) from scoring a huge hit in his subsequent over. Ahmad also prevented Babar from finishing his century.

Afghanistan’s best results ever for a World Cup debut
Ahmed had the greatest Opta statistics for an Afghan bowler making their World Cup debut. Notably, only S Zadran (4/38) and Mohammad Nabi (4/30) have taken more wickets for Afghanistan in a game throughout the tournament.
10/14

An unprecedented victory for Afghanistan
As previously reported, Afghanistan defeated Pakistan in their first-ever ODI and World Cup matches.
The former had suffered defeats to Pakistan in each of their previous seven ODIs. These three losses all occurred earlier this year.
Notably, Afghanistan has only triumphed in three World Cup games. In this edition, England was the opponent in one of these victories. Their other World Cup victory was over Scotland.

Pakistan was fueled by Shafique’s 58-run performance.
Shafique immediately conveyed his good intentions. With Imam, he had an opening partnership that lasted 56 runs.

Shafique continued to score his third half-century in ODI cricket even after Imam left the game on 17.

He now has three goals of at least 50 in the current World Cup. He hit five fours and two sixes in his 58 off of 75 balls.

Hashmatullah Shahidi, Gurbaz, and Rahmat all make game-winning swings.
While Gurbaz, Rahmat, and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (48*) all contributed game-winning hits, Zadran was Afghanistan’s leading scorer.
Gurbaz scored 65 runs on 53 balls (nine fours and one six). In WC 2023, it was his second 50+ score.
Rahmat hit an unbeatable 77 (84). The knock contained two sixes and five fours.
Additionally, he achieved 400 World Cup runs, a first for an Afghan batter.
